Over the past couple weeks in Humanities, we have been working on a project called Working With Worlds. The driving question was “How might I construct text that shows who I am right now?” In this project we would create an ebook with nine poems about our worldview.
We wanted to be able to analyze poems in numerous ways. We also wanted to be able to find joy in poetry. The biggest goal of this project however, was to be able to create meaningful and effective texts that show something about who we are.
When we started this project we did an entry event where we organized a cut up poem into what we thought it was in small groups. Then we began our poetry terms list where we would write all about different poetry terms we had learned about. We would later have a test on this. As the weeks progressed, we learned about different types of poetry and wrote nine poems.
These are the poems we created:
- A simile poem
- A metaphor poem
- Three haikus
- A found poem
- An imagery poem
- A sound poem
- An experience poem
- A personification poem
- A self portrait poem
All of these poems had to relate to our worldview. Each one had to be accompanied by a piece of media. We also created meaning statement recordings for each one. All of these poems were then put in our ebook. We will also soon be presenting these poems at a PLP 8 and 9 coffee house performance.
This is my ebook:
So far, I think that I have done a good job of creating effective poems and this project has really helped my poetry skills grow. To answer the driving question, there are lots of different poetry formats in which you could use to create a text that represents who you are right now.
