Marvellous Maker Movies-Alberta Edition!
When I stepped on to that Seycove bus at 6 am, I was not expecting the ride too be so long, I can’t remember how many times I fell asleep in the weirdest ways, but I had two things that kept me going my music, and my friends, oh and can’t forget Mr Harris’s music 🤘
Hello, and welcome back to my blog! I’ve just completed our first maker and humanities project, and it’s been quite the fascinatingly fun journey! This blog post is all about the Maker driving question and project but you can check out the Humanities blog post here
This project was all about telling stories through a video (moving image), to do this we made four types of videos: A silent video, an investigative video, a TikTok video, and an At Home Video! To kick things off, we embarked on a road trip through the WILD WEST! (BC and Alberta.) Each one of these maker videos taught me their different, unique things, and they show their different, unique stories!
TikTok Videos
A cool thing about these TikTok videos is that there were like no limits! We could film as many as we wanted to, we could do it at any of the places we stoped, and we could really make it any style too! I found these super fun to piece together, and the end result was the best part! I learnt and got a lot better at doing transitions! The first TikTok styled video we made, was confusing but the ones after that got a lot easier! I also learnt how to tell a story through a short video. I decided to make 5 TikTok videos, you can find a full description in my Ebook, linked at the end of my Humanities blog post!
One thing that I learnt for next time is to be more on-top of the locations where I am going to film. For some of the TikTok’s I had to change the original locations because I may of had forgotten to film at the organized location.
Silent Video
We filmed our silent videos at the Ghost Town/Three Vally Gap! It was a super cool place, where a bunch of little buildings and shops have been brought from the Gold Rush times! I know it is super cool! To make things even cooler, you could literally make best friends with all of the jump scare mannequins! I made besties with the Dentists patient:
Before creating the silent videos, we made story spines to help our group members really understand what we have to do when we get to the ghost town! Here is ours:
And here is our final Silent Video:
I am super happy with how this video turned out, and I am very impressed with my acting skills, which I never knew I had until now! I learnt so many things from this Silent Video, like different camera angles, different effects, how music can change EVERYTHING, and I learnt how to create feelings, thoughts and communicate through exaggerated actions. If I could’ve done anything different it probably would’ve been to make sure the background music was not copy-write before publishing it. Once I published it it said it was copy right so we had to edit the music and re publish it.
At Home Video
“What inspires me?” Well we all made our own videos of us answering that exact question! This video really was kind of out of my comfort zone, I had to really think about what I love to do(which wasn’t too hard) it was more the question “what makes me, me!?” I don’t really know why that was hard to answer as I thought it was going to be a lot easier. However in the end I got there, and I showed it all in my video. Through the process of making this, I learnt sooo many things! I learnt more about myself for starters, as well as how to show and represent ME in a video, I learnt how to edit some cool things like overlay for an example! That is where you can add videos on top of video in Cap Cut. This was really fun and I am happy with how it turned out and in my script as well!
If I would change one thing, it would’ve been to be more time efficient and to not procrastinate. I waited too long to film a few of these clips which effected the lighting, and I had to edit it, which took up more time.
Investigative Video
You may be wondering what an investigative video is, I like to call it an interview video, it was one of the videos we had to create! Let’s just start off with asking you “have you ever had to go up to strangers and ask to “interview” them?” Well that’s what we all had to do… this 100 percent shoved me out of my comfort zone. To be honest, when I first heard that we had to do this, I was not nervous at all (for some reason..) but once it was time to go and ask people… well the first time I tried to interview someone was at the ghost town, my friend was with me.. but I ended up chickening out, and following them. My friend called me creepy, which I guess I understand.. after that experience I kind of got scared again of being scary..😱 but finally I got over it, as I actually had to or else I would not have this video done. So I decided to recover by doing my first interview with my friend Meghan so I had someone by my side. That interview went well, so later in the trip I decided to do one by myself! Which went GREAT! Overall I learnt so much when it came to talking to random people, I got a lot better at it (but I still have a lot to work on) I learnt to gather information from a variety of sources. I also filmed my friends interviews and gathered information from theirs. Also editing this was fun, I wanted to give it that YouTube video effect and add some BIG BOLD WRITING! Check it out down below:
I would do a few things differently, for starters, is to not be as nervous, and to do more interviews and gather more information. I also would want to make more eye contact with the person I was talking too. I feel like these are things we get better at with some practice and some time.
Conclusion
I learnt a lot from this project, mainly filming and editing skills but also skills that I will use everyday for the rest of my life. I learnt how to tell a story through a moving image whether that video had sound or not, I still managed to do it! I am very proud of all of my work, and how it turned out! Also a little fact- one of my TikTok’s that I posted on YouTube shorts has 4.3 k views at this moment! Thanks for reading my Maker Blog Post, feel free to check out my Humanities Blog Post, and YouTube Channel!
PEACE OUT-✌️
