It’s the end of the world!! But how did we get here?
Introduction
For this project, we did multiple things such as: mapping our worldview based on 7 subjects, reading “The Outsiders” and relating it to our worldview, filling out role sheets and reading reflections based on the book and the character’s worldview, lastly, we remixed the R.E.M song “It’s the end of the World as we know it” and made it relate to how our worldview is changing as we transition from elementary school to high school. You can view my song by clicking here but before I go any further, the driving question of this project was “how can a text help me understand myself as my worldview is changing?”
My Mindmap
This is my MindNode I made, about worldview, you can see the 7 subjects branching off of “my worldview.” This MindNode wasn’t fun to make, but it was super helpful. I used the MindNode for so many things, like notes for my song!
The Book
The book we read was called “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton. It was a fairly short book which we read over the course of three weeks. After every section of the book we had to fill out role sheets and have a group discussion. Our groups would be picked before the project started by a teacher, and we would be assigned a number within our group. The number you got would tell you what role sheet to do over the weeks. Here is what some parts of an empty role sheet looked like;

Why did we read The Outsiders?
In short: because they are very similar to us, and the book shows us how the character’s (who are also teenagers) worldview is changing. It also shows us multiple factors that can influence a change in their worldview such as, events; like the brawl that was held in the park between the two main gangs in the book.
What’s Next?
WHAT! There’s more?!? Yes, and its the biggest, most exciting part… This is the part all about our song we made and our song we made with our group. First of all, we individually wrote our own lyrics to the R.E.M song “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” which you can view here. We handed it in and we thought we were done. But we weren’t! We still had to fuse all of our group members songs into one song, which took way longer than it should have. With our groups, we took the lyrics we made, had them on one pages document, and have another group member recording us all sing the lyrics. Of course this took many attempts to get something which was.. acceptable?
Our music video
After we were done crafting our song, we had to find a bunch of photos which related to the lyrics that were being sung in the song, and they had to be displayed at the right time. We split up the amount of photos we needed among the three group members and ended up each getting around 30 photos give or take one or two. The last part of this step was the mash it all together in iMovie and give ourselves credit. This sounds very intriguing right? Why don’t you check it out here!
The last steps
After we were done that, we had to make a reflection on our group work, making a pie chart on how we think how much work everybody did in the group. Then we explained why we gave the percentages we gave, and explained what we did well. We aren’t even done yet?! NO! Of course not, we still had to watch The Outsiders movie after reading the book, and make notes in a Venn diagram about the movie, and what we noticed about their worldview compared to ours (and of course some similarities because it’s a Venn diagram.) We used this diagram to create a driving question paragraph which looked like this:
Conclusion
A quick overview of what we did, we did; a mindmap, read the book, filled out role sheets and reading checks, made our own song, made a group song with a music video, we watched the movie on the outsiders, made a reflection about our group work, made a Venn diagram, made a driving question paragraph, and now a blog post about all of it.
Reflection
Some things I would change if I got to do this project again would include; refining my song and making it match the instrumental of the R.E.M song, taking more time on the first role sheets to fully answer all of the questions in depth, and I also would’ve redone a few parts of my mindmap, to make it easier to understand.
Hey Sven i liked your post a lot it was filled with descriptive writing and hard work. I saw how much effort you put into the mind node and i was shocked good job.
