The wilderness must be explored! 🌿

🏎️ How does language inspire adventure?🏎️

Background information

There’s a lot to unpack in this project, so I’m going to start off with some background information. First of all, our end goal for this project is to make an ad campaign about the Oregon coast, to get us a feel of how to make advertisements effective, we went through both a design workshop and many drafts of our final ad. We also practiced making ads before going to Oregon, (yes, we went to Oregon) like this ad of quarry rock! This is what my first draft looked like!

Adventure!

If you couldn’t already tell, our project was about adventure and the wilderness. So to get us thinking about what adventure and the wilderness really was, we were prompted with a really simple question: What is your definition of adventure? To which I wrote: “When I hear the word adventure, I think of a road trip that took my family and I to the Rocky Mountains, it was a long trip filled with lots of hiking and is probably one of the reasons I love hiking so much now. I have countless breathtaking pictures from this trip and it was very memorable. To me, adventure is going outside and doing something. Maybe its mountain biking or hiking. An adventure doesn’t have to be very long like a road trip, it could be just finding new things and exploring new places, and an adventure usually has a reward to it, like a view or a summit!”

How are we inspired by language?

My answer to the driving question is that language can be the drive for adventure in many ways, whether that’s connecting with people, getting to know somebody, or just communicating in general. Language is something that brings people together. Language can inspire adventure in many ways, even if you’re just planning an adventure, language plays a big part. Language is a tool that people use to bring each other together! One case of this could be to go on an adventure with some people! Language can tie into culture too! Hearing about a culture or language can drive you to learn or visit that culture! But the biggest case of language inspire adventure is by people sharing stories and experiences! While we were on the Oregon trip, we had a book to fill out which would inspire our adventure, take a look at it here!

The Campaign

What is this campaign anyways?? Well, as I said at the start of the blog post, we were tasked with making an ad campaign to make people want to visit Oregon (using our driving question of how does language inspire adventure? Hint: our ads count as language!) We were put into random groups (like always) and got working, first, each group was given out a theme, our theme happened to be connection with nature, (which is pretty much perfect) you can see our theme shown by our designs on our tote bags, shirts, stickers, and posters. As you look at our merchandise you can see our slogan: “A Breath of Wilderness.” Which we wanted to have the consumer feel like they are on the Oregon coast, just resetting and taking a deep breath of nature! This is what our final campaign looked like at the spring exhibition!

My ad

So, what was our campaign made up of? Individual ads! Each person made one advertisement that they would use they best efforts to encapsulate the Oregon coast in, making people want to visit Oregon (like an ad usually does.) With my ad, I wanted to put a big focus on the nature of Oregon mixing in with the wavy coast, my final ad came out to look like this, and something i learnt from the process of making the ads is that revisions may suck while you do them, but in the end it is very worth it to look at how much better something can turn out!

Conclusion

In conclusion, this project was actually a lot of fun! (Not just because of the field study) I feel like there is a lot I can take away from this project, and there is lots to reflect on too. If I were to have done this project again, something I would fix would be to make more extra merchandise! It is something that really elevated our campaign
