Hiking and Learning! 🥾✍️
Alberta was filled with hiking and learning! And yes I did put them in order of what we did more! In total we hiked around 40 kilometres. Now, this post is about what we learned not about the large amount of hiking we did. We went to Alberta to answer the driving question, How has the geography of the west shaped who we are? In this project we built a thesis on a topic we wanted to further investigate. We then made a video called the investigative video. The link will lead to my maker blog post where I show the video! The video is used to share the results of what we found. We found this information through conducting interviews in the places we went
My thesis stated that the activities and sports people play to stay active and healthy, is a reflection of where they are from. For me, sports contribute a tremendous amount to who I am as a student, athlete, teammate and friend. I knew when the driving question asked how geography shapes who we are, I had to include sports. If I didn’t play sports I wouldn’t be the competitive, hardworking, determined, leader that I am. Through the interviews we conducted, I found that people have easier access to mountains for activities such as hiking, skiing, and mountain biking if they live in the west.
Another important piece of this project, is our multi touch book. The book had places that were historically or geographically significant to our project. Most of the places we did learning, had a page. At each location there were two pages. 1. a title page with images and very brief description of one of the five themes of geography. 2. A reflection page. The reflection page had three questions that we had to answer. Each question represented a Keystone in the project. The three questions were 1. What is geography through one or more of the Five Themes of Geography? 2. What made and makes the West by how this photograph represents the physical environment influencing the nature of political, social, and economics in the West. 3. Your own connection and interpretation of the place the photo represents. These questions made us think of and notice these things in Alberta. Attached below is my book!
The last thing we did in this project which I have included in my book, is the five themes of geography comic life. We had to choose 5 pictures that we took on our trip, and each picture showed a different theme. The five themes are used by geographers to study the place they are in. The themes are location, place, human environment interaction, movement, and region. I explain in greater detail of what they all mean in the book. Location is shown by exact location, or in relation to something else. Place is defined by physical landforms or how people live in a place. Human environment interaction is how us as humans interact with our local environment. Movement is how people, things, and ideas are transported. Lastly region can be decided by government, decided a service provided in that area (newspaper distribution), or people’s perceptions of that area.
Alberta was a great learning experience that I will forever remember. I will also remember all of the amazing but challenging hikes we went on, and the beautiful views we saw. Living in Vancouver contributes a tremendous amount to the activities I can play that makes me, well me!
Syddy giddy out! ✌️
