Sydnee’s reflections

“The sun’s gonna rise tomorrow”

The World Needs More Canada, Eh 🇨🇦

Canada may be recognized for the maple syrup, hockey talent, Tim Hortons, and our funny way of talking but we are so much more. Canada is a peacekeeping country, its home to many diverse cultures, and we value and protect the rights of our citizens. In this project we explored Canadian identity, Canada on the world stage, and  analyzed Canadian literature. We then made a 5 minute podcast episode answering the question why does the world need more canada. Each class members episode was then added to our podcast series called “The World Needs More Canada.” We expanded our podcasting skills as well as our knowledge about Canada. Canada is a great place to live and throughout this project I have learned just how lucky I am to get to call Canada my home.

As a Canadian it is important for me to learn about my country. I learned how globalization impacts the products we see. Globalization allows us to get the fruit and food we love. Globalization makes trade possible. I also learned about Canada’s involvement in nato and its regulations on conflict. Due to the fact that canada is a peacekeeping country we will never enter a conflict on our own. We must be accompanied by an ally. With this new knowledge we began to think about a topic of interest that would effectively answer the driving question. After lots of thought I came up with my topic. It is about Canadian content laws (CanCon). CanCon plays a huge role in promoting Canadian artists. These laws say that radio stations must play at least 35% Canadian music. With the implementation of CanCon Canadian artists were able to achieve success globally. I enjoyed learning about these laws because music is an extremely large part of who I am and it was so interesting to learn the impact these laws truly do have on smaller Canadian artists.

Before being able to jump into a podcast episode, there were many things I had to do before to ensure I had a complete understanding of my topic. One example being a multi-paragraph composition, but who are we kidding we all know its an essay. The hardest part of creating this essay was doing the research. Once I had all my info I was able to easily transfer my notes into an essay. The most challenging part of the whole project was then turning the essay into a script for my podcast. My writing had to go from an academic and professional style to a more fun, engaging, and easy to follow style. I found it to be really challenging to tell a story within my podcast. I communicated with my teachers as well as my parents at home and I got support. I found ways to make my podcast engaging and easy to listen to. I used techniques such as sound effects, an interview, telling the story of someone who has benefited from CanCon as well as reading my script in sections and in my regular speaking voice so I didn’t sound like a robot. Finding ways to make my podcast engaging was a was a challenge, but one I was able overcome.

Part of essay

Creating this podcast was a fun project which allowed me to be creative. I played around with sound effects and songs to enhance my podcast episode. I am excited to continue to build my podcasting skills later on in the year. I will continue to work on writing essays as well as literary analysis throughout the year. In this project I was able to manage my time effectively. I handed my work in on time and was able to complete my work before the deadline. I contributed a strong episode to include into my class podcast that I am very proud of. Researching about a topic that I find interesting makes the whole presses more enjoyable. This project taught me a lot about canada and made me appreciate the fact that I am Canadian.
