This post is the fourth post in the little blog post series that I’m doing. This time like I promised in my last post I will be talking about something other than Percy Jackson. This time I’ll be talking about a book series called Divergent it’s another book that is quite different from its movie. I’m going to focus mainly on the second book called Insurgent. What is Divergent About?
(If you’ve read Divergent then you can skip this part)
Divergent is the first book/movie in the Divergent series by Veronica Roth which is a dystopian book placed in Chicago after a nuclear war. The city is revealed in the third book to have been a test subject for the factions system. There are 5 factions in this world; Amity (the kind), Abnigation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligence) and Candor (the truthful). On your sixteeth birthday you get to choose your faction (factions are based on your personality and values) most people choose their birth faction but, on her sixteenth birthday the main character Beatrice “Tris” Prior doesn’t choose her birth faction (Abnigation) and instead chooses Dauntless which is a very different change from Abnigation.
In Dauntless, Tris has to go through many challenges and she gets marked on them. In the faction system if you don’t fit in perfectly then you get kicked out and then your considered Factionless (homeless) and that’s basically a death sentence. In Dauntless Tris finds out that she’s Divergent (she doesn’t fit into just one faction) and that’s dangerous to the system. So Tris and her sorta boyfriend Four (his real name is Tobias but he doesn’t like it because his dad abused him and he named him so he goes by Four cause he only has four fears) try to break out of Dauntless but things don’t go as planned and all of the Dauntless soldiers get “chipped” and that makes them mindless drones but Tris and Four are divergent so they can’t be controlled. Then Tris and Four fight the government and free all the Dauntless soldiers then escape on the trains that never stop.
So now you’re all caught up on the first book/movie let’s move onto the second book/movie and I’ll point out some differences.
The Differences Between The Movie And Book
So, this is probably the most inaccurate book to movie I’ve ever seen. The movie completely changed the plot. Your probably asking yourself ‘what do you mean Sydney a movie can’t be that different than the book’ and I’m here to tell yes, it can. I’m going to be limiting myself to 5 differences because there are so many.
- In the book they are constantly mentioning serums and how each faction has one but in the movie they only mention the Dauntless and Candor serum.
- In the movie when Tris sacrifices herself to Erudite to stop the forced suicides, Erudite does this simulation on her that only a fully Divergent person can pass. In the book Erudite also does tests on her but then tries to kill her with a death serum.
- In the book Erudite never tests anyone to determine if they are 100% Divergent but they do that in the movie.
- In the book the Dauntless go back to their headquarters after getting kicked out of Candor but in the movie they go to the Factionless.
- Like most movies to books there were quite a few characters missing. Some of the missing characters were the characters that jumped of the edge while being mind controlled by Erudite’s leader Jeanine and I think that if the movie actually spent some time getting to know those characters their deaths would’ve been more impactful.
Overall Thoughts
I think that this movie on it’s own would be fine but when you compare it to the book it just isn’t right. I really liked the movie even though it wasn’t book accurate. I’d definitely say to read the book then watch the movie but you should read and watch both.
