Destination Imagination- Provincials, 2018

“This is all thanks to our good luck charm, Cole Sprouse”

We succeeded at the DI.

And its all thanks to a picture of Cole Sprouse we found stuck to someone’s locker that we put on the back of our set.

While we were presenting, we did our best run-through ever. And when is a better time to do your best performance yet then when you’re presenting for everyone?

We Fixed Things

In my last DI Blog Post I explained some things we were going to fix to make our presentation better.

After last time, we had some things to fix.

One, our disaster zone set.

Two, our act change.

Three, our spectacle.

Four, our performance.

1.)—

In our last attempt at DI, one of our biggest flaws was our set.

The set was unstable, and when it we needed it most, it broke.

Our last set needed a LOT of improvement. It broke while we were doing our performance, it would have been pretty bad if it fell over, and it caused a lot of problems.

So we re-built it. We made a super-fabulous, easily transportable, updated set.

Our new set folded in half for easier transportation, and we created better stability for our cave.

The changes to the set made a big difference with our performance, it made everything feel more stable with what we were doing in our performance.

2.)—

Last time, we forgot about our division between act 1 and act 2.

It probably had something to do with the fact that our set broke and we were distracted. The first time we performed definitely didn’t go as well as planned since everything was rushed and insane.

This time, we actually remembered to do it, instant step up!
Not only did we manage to remember to do the scene of the act change, we remembered the sign too!

The act change was a reasonably large amount of our scoring and we forgot it and that was unfortunate. But this time we remembered it and everything went great!

3.)—

We changed the plan for our spectacle so many times, I can barley remember which one we went with.

Last time we went with a dance at the end of the performance, but we were cut off.

This time, we did the spectacle at the very beginning with our first song. And as far as I can tell (as I was behind the set and couldn’t see anything), it went pretty well.

Our spectacle was a dance once again, but it was a better dance that showed more of a story and looked more like a spectacle would.

The updates were well done, Lauren did a great job on the dance planning and all of my group did a great job bringing it to life.

4.)—

The performance was so much better this time then ever.

It was really good luck for us that while we were performing this time, we had our best run through ever.

It was the best performance we had had doing the skit, and we are all pretty proud of it.

Last time, everything was a bit rushed, it was kind of not totally successful. This time, everything went so well, it was amazing!

Like A Good Student

We did a lot of learning.

We always do a lot of learning during the DI months.

When you do DI, its all about team work, creativity and anger control.

You learn how to work in a team better, how to create needed ideas, and sometimes give them up when they aren’t needed. Its sacrificing your ideas to make things work, and trying to not kill your group members because “THAT IS NEVER GOING TO WORK DAMMIT” and “JUST LISTEN TO ME”.
It’s throwing away all your work and starting again even though you only have four days left, but we need to get this right, we can do this!

It’s working late afternoons and early mornings to get work done because if you don’t there’s no way this is going to happen.
It’s stress to the point where if you haven’t cried yet, you’re not doing it right.
DI is pushing your creativity to the limits while trying to stay under a budget. It’s late nights and way too much caffeine and sugar.

But at the end of the day, it helps us learn for other projects and just life.

The anger management you learn while doing DI will help you not kill your group members in other projects, or not pour coffee on your fellow barista later in life, because they wont stop talking about World War 2 tanks.

The group work will help you in jobs when you need to work with others on pretty much anything.

Coming up with ideas on the spot will help you almost always.

And being able to work late even though you don’t want to will help you keep your job so you can pay for your cell data and Netflix in the future.

Oh And We Came In First Place

Quick backstory:

When we arrived at DI, we had to put our stuff in our assigned challenge rooms, but our challenge room was a hallway. Halfway through the day we found this cut-out of Cold Sprouse’s face stuck on a locker door behind our set. We stole the Cole Sprouse face cutout and stuck it on the back of our set and used it as our good luck charm.

Next thing I know, Im in Ottawa, innocently drawing because I didn’t see the notification saying we were going to learn about our DI scores, when my crazy group members came rushing up to my bed like psychopaths.
The came streaming through the dorm to the end like “TAMARA TAMARA TAMARA TAMARA” and I looked up and asked what happened and I just got “WE WON DI!”.

WE SUCCEEDED AT THE DI. WE DID THE SUCCESS.

We won both our instant challenge and our normal challenge. It might have been talent, but we think it was the Cole Sprouse good luck charm.

Conclusion

DI is always a super stressful and tying time of the year, but in the end we always come out that much better.

This year I came out of it with a new look at group work, coming up with ideas and organizing plans.

I am so proud of my group and how we did at Provincials this year.

Thank you for reading about my DI Provincials Experience of 2018, and remember, Don’t be decapitated by the boat.
