As always, our latest project requires a blog post, because, to quote Mrs. P, “Learning is in reflection.”This project was a lot of Mrs. P talking about colonization. We learned from the point when the colonizers first came to Canada until after the 7 years war. I think that the main thing that we learned from this project was the different perspectives of colonization. We learned from the perspectives of Indigenous people, French women, missionaries, poor people, and rich people. We were put into groups and each person had to research a different group. To my disappointment, I didn’t get Fille De Roi and ended up with missionaries. We each wrote up a paragraph about our group of people and as a group we answered the questions “How did colonization affect different groups of people?” And “How does colonization still affect us today?” We then filmed this and put it together. I enjoyed this project. It was definitely interesting learning from the perspectives of different. And bonus of hearing Mrs. P mispronounce ‘Fille De Roi’ about a thousand times.
Unfortunately I can’t can’t attach our video because it was too big, but this is my piece on missionaries.
“Missionaries
New France, 1615. The first missionaries come to Canada with the intention to come and save the ‘savages’. But it was like nothing they could’ve expected.
The missionaries intention to come to Canada was simple. They were going to go spread Christianity and convert Indigenous people. The reality was nothing like the missionaries had expected. Life was harsh in New France. It was nothing like settled France. The missionaries also weren’t welcomed with open arms like they’d thought they’d be. A lot of Indigenous groups didn’t like the missionaries coming in and telling them how to live. The missionaries also brought many diseases like smallpox to Indigenous groups that didn’t have any immunity to them. Due to this, the missionaries were always in danger. The missionaries did manage to convert some Indigenous people. The numbers depend on which source you’re reading from, but it likely wasn’t what the missionaries set out to do. Many children were educated by the missionaries. This meant the ideas the missionaries had about other people were passed on to the children of New France. For better or for worse, the missionaries made a huge impact on Canada.“
