Good habits were achieved this year
Next year good behaviours
DRIVING QUESTION
How can you showcase evidence to demonstrate that PLP Success Behaviours have prepared you to advance to the next grade?
Introduction
With Grade 10 behind me, and Grade 11 looming overhead; I have lot of reflecting to do. In this blog post, I am reflecting on who I was this year, what important projects took place, and who I can become next year.
My biggest highlight this year was the implementation of structure.Â
Agency — Setting Goals and Engagement in Class
For years I’ve been told to use Things, and I never have. I haven’t convinced myself it is a good thing, there to make my life easier. I think, if school had stayed the same, I would have kept that mindset, but it did change.Â
The reason I started using things this year, is because of the falloff of Showbie’s importance. For the last two years, if I had homework, I could check somewhere, or ask someone what the homework is, and I’d know.Â
This year, that didn’t work. I noticed early on that things weren’t on Showbie, and what I heard in class was what I needed to do, not what I saw on my iPad. Due to this I needed to improve my attention in class, and my goal setting.Â
Clear concise understanding of the work and expectations was crucial. This was the turning point for me, when I put in to work the habits, which I had learned in the first project of this year, the goal setting project of grade 9, and the countless times I had been told to use things, and we’d practiced it. This is the moment where I locked in.
From then on, I started using things regularly. And it changed the game. I used it for math, I used it for PLP, I used it for climbing, I used it for BCBoulderBoys (check it out).
Joo Sae Hyuk – Defence of a King – The Tom Style
I often fall behind in projects, doing things at a slower pace, which is all good until the end of a project, when I simply can’t keep the same pace anymore, or else theres no way for me to finish. At that point, I have a week, and maybe a weekend where I clutch up hard.Â
You see Joo Sae Hyuk doesn’t need to play aggressively to win points. He plays at his pace, and defends each barrage of smashes, until his opponent makes a mistake, and he can seize the opportunity.Â
He plays until 21 points, and for me the blog posts go till 25 points, with no deuce to keep the pressure up. I’m supposed to play like I still have something to lose, but in my eyes, I have already won. The project’s over, and all of the pressure has bubbled off.Â
I might be convinced that they are important similar to using Things, but I have not matured enough to realize how important written reflection is, instead of just thinking about it for a bit on the last day, and complain about some things I struggled with.Â
The main pro of writing things out like this for a public audience is that anyone can see it, and I have to say reasonable and responsible things.
For this blog post, we did some reflecting by evaluating how well we display certain behaviours. In this blog I have chosen three to display, those being ‘goals and self assessing’, ‘completing evidence’ and ‘engagement’. You can see them throughout this blog.
Conclusion
My biggest goal for next year
My work is handed in late. A lot. And very late.
Agency – Completing evidence
I have had a history of handing in my work late. Since I was a kid, in elementary school I didn’t struggle in school at all. I never had to put in any work.
I was mute.Â
In high school I started to have to try, but I did it by working harder, still without systems.Â
I was speaking.
In grade 9 I started struggling. For the first time I had to focus in math, and I got stumped many times. In order to avoid working I came up with excuses. I said I would focus on the learning, not the assignments. This lazy attitude showed in my work. There were times when I would work, but it was on my own terms, not the demands of the school. Again, being lazy and arrogant.
Now that I look back, it’s crazy that I didn’t get absolutely terrible grades last year, at least comparing with the standard of grade 10.Â
My best project in grade 9 was my first, that being the geography of the west. That can be attributed to the agency I had during that project. It was a glimpse of maturity, a rare occurrence with me.Â
I was shouting.
In grade 10, I had a slow start. I was still dealing with the ideas andÂ
I got a microphone.
Next year I hope to inspire people to speak with me.
I don’t just want to act like a successful student, I want to be one. I don’t want to be seen as lazy or immature, I want to be seen with respect, as someone I would have looked up to.
Implementing behaviours
This goal was inspired by Jo-Lo, C-Lo, Johnny Hsiao, and Daniel Boglari.
In essence I want to become like them.
I want to be smart, capable, and ready to take on anything.
And I will be next year, by using my successful behaviours.
