For our final term in grade ten we have combined both our science and math classes to create a new project would help us use both of these skills. We had to answer the question, how can we recapture renewable energy from nature? There were a few things we had to do to answer this question.
First of all in our science component we had to create a generator that was strong enough to power a couple of small LED’s. To make a generator that could do this we researched many different ways that to power these small LED’s. Our first attempt at this started out as a water wheel that would spin a very small motor inside of a box that we made which represented a house. However we found out soon after that this would not work for us so we went onto idea #2.
Like I said before we researched many different ways that could power these LED’s, and one of these ways was to use very strong neodymium magnets. We rapped a lot of copper wire around a small cardboard tube and put the magnets inside of it. When you shake the tube with the mage nets inside it the electric field around the magnets passes through the copper and cause the LED’s to light up. This was the idea that we used for our project.
Now for the math component of this project. For this math unit we have been using linear equations to measure how much energy is being used in a certain amount of time. We had to use this to determine how much energy our generator would be putting out. We had to measure the out put and graph how much energy it would produce over time.
This would play a large roll in the final product that we would create. We had to make a video that would advertise this generator to a general consumer. Our approach to this was a making the generator into a bike light that would help other riders let you know where you are. When you are riding the bike and go over a bump it causes the magnets to move and the light to light up.
The video we made showed how much energy it produced over time and different instances in which it was used. We filmed the video and showed different graphs that would help us advertise the product. We also had to compare it to solar panels and how much more effective it would be. Over all this project gave us a very interesting perspective on how to use different parts of math and science to create something that could be used in real life. I am very excited to see how these things will be helpful to is in the future.
