DI otherwise known as Destination Imagination is a global project. Many schools participate in each year including mine. Each year Destination Imagination is pretty similar besides last year because of Covid. It involves a group of 5-9 people who try to solve a “Challenge”. This “Challenge” is decided by the creators of DI each year. However they always follow a specific theme, Scientific, Engineering, Fine Arts, or Improv. Like last year, I was put into a group of 5 people who were trying to complete the Scientific challenge. Unlike last year where we had to make a Documentary. We had to make a Skit like it usually is. Also my teammates this year were Fraser, Faith, Sabrina and Cale.
To complete this years Scientific challenge, you needed to included many things into your skit. It had to include a Micro World, a Mysterious Object, a Visual effect and 2 Team Choice Elements. Team Choice Elements can be anything as long as your team choses it. You are also going head to head with all the other groups doing the same challenge as you.
Once we learned all we needed to have we got started on working. At the beginning there isn’t much to do. You get to know your teammates, you chose a team name and it is all pretty fun. But as you get closer to the day you have to present, it gets worse and worse. But more on that later. After we picked the name “Synical Scientists” (we spelled cynical with an s on purpose), we got started on little things. We read over the challenge guide and rules we have to follow. We also found out that there was another team doing the scientific challenge in our class. Their team was pretty stacked. They had Teva, Ava and Ariane, three of the smartest people in our class. They also had Theryn and Julian, two of the best builders in our class. Automatically we knew we would have a hard time. This project overlapped with us going to Loon Lake. So we didn’t get a lot of time to work around that time ,which would have helped a lot. Around the time we got back from Loon Lake was the time where it started to get stressful. We had a dress rehearsal with our teachers coming up in a couple weeks, but spring break was right in the middle of that. So we had to do a lot of work fast. Which meant we would have to go into school early many times to work on it, which we did. We also once went to Faiths house after school to make a backdrop and props. That was one of the only fun parts during the project.
In the end we decided to make our Micro World Scenery a Sulfolobus acidocaldarius archaebacteria. We made our Mysterious Object a box with Hydraulics inside that push up a lair of card boar with fluorescent paint on it. We made our visual effect fluorescent paint that we put on our mysterious object and backdrop. To make our backdrop 3D we put balloons on the ground for when we got into the micro world. Also our 2 Team Choice Elements were songwriting and creating a poem about one of our characters “Uncle Frank”.
On the day of presenting to the appraisers, most of my team got there pretty late. However that was the case for most of the groups because there was so much traffic in Vancouver. But once everyone got there it was one of the best parts of the whole project. We went in the room to present and all of our worries went away. After wards everyone was saying that it was very funny. Most of that came from our character “Uncle Frank” who was put in to be sort of a comic relief. But now that it is all done, I can only remember the good parts. Also from this project I learned the value of team work and set roles for different tasks. Also that hard work pays off in the end because you will ultimately feel great about it.
